Neurological Observation

Some critically ill patients need frequent, structured checks of consciousness and neurological status. In the ICU, this is done with trained nurses, clear protocols, and consultant oversight — so changes are spotted early.

What Observation Includes

• Regular Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and pupil assessments

• Sedation management tailored to clinical goals

• Monitoring for seizures or sudden neurological change

• Airway and breathing support when consciousness is reduced

• Prompt escalation to the consultant team when scores change

When It Is Needed

Neurological observation is used after certain surgeries, head injury, stroke-related critical illness, severe infection affecting the brain, or whenever sedation and critical illness make ward-level checks insufficient.

Specialist Input

When required, the ICU team involves consultant neurology or other specialists. Care plans are reviewed daily so monitoring intensity matches the patient’s condition.
