ICU Services
Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition
Specialist nutritional support for patients who cannot eat safely during prolonged critical illness.
Critical illness increases nutritional needs while making normal eating difficult or unsafe. The ICU team plans feeding carefully — protecting the airway, supporting healing, and adjusting intake as the patient improves.
Types of Support
Enteral nutrition via feeding tube when the gut can be used
Parenteral (IV) nutrition when enteral feeding is not possible or not enough
Daily review of tolerance, sugars, and fluid balance
Gradual return to oral intake when swallowing is safe
Why Nutrition Matters in ICU
Adequate nutrition supports immune function, wound healing, and muscle strength. Underfeeding or unsafe feeding can slow recovery — so plans are individualised and reviewed with the multidisciplinary team.
Safety & Monitoring
We monitor for aspiration risk, tube position, blood sugar changes, and electrolyte balance. Infection-control standards are followed for all feeding lines and connections.
What Families Should Know
Not being able to eat does not mean care has stopped — it often means we are protecting the patient while they heal. Ask the nurse or consultant how feeding fits into the day’s plan.
